Description
This article provides useful information about Canvas observer accounts.
Explanation/Steps
Automatically-Created Observer Accounts
MCCSC now creates observer accounts for parents listed as Family 1 in Skyward. Those individuals receive an email from MCCSC and another from Instructure Canvas which asks them to set a password. The resulting observer account is automatically linked to their children. Parents who already have observer accounts are unaffected.
Parents listed as Family 1 in Skyward will receive the following email messages, sent to the email address they have listed in Skyward. "Finishing the registration process" requires the parent to set a password for their observer account.
Manually-Created Observer Accounts
Parents not listed as Family 1 in Skyward may manually create "Observer" accounts for access to one or more students in the MCCSC Canvas app. These observer accounts require the pairing of a student to the parent with an observer code. The following instructions explain how teachers can generate pairing codes for parents to use and how parents/students can generate the code from within the student's browser-based Canvas account. Each pairing code expires after one use or 7 days.
- Export Pairing Codes for Entire Class (Convenient for Teachers)
- In Course Navigation, click the People link.
- Export Pairing Codes
You can also export a list of new pairing codes for all students in your course. Click the Options icon [1], then select the Export Pairing Codes link [2]. Canvas exports a CSV file with one pairing code for each student in your course.
View Pairing Codes
Locate and open the pairing codes CSV file on your computer. The CSV file displays the first and last name of each student, the student's pairing code, and the date and time at which the pairing code will expire.
Note: Pairing codes are case sensitive.
